The 1880 Origins
Located in Western Kentucky, Fancy Farm is a town built on deep Catholic roots and the legacy of St. Jerome Church and its school. Throughout the 1800s, dedicated early settlers and pastors carefully cultivated this community, establishing the spiritual and educational foundations we cherish today. The town earned its unique name after a postal inspector admired the lush, well-kept land, exclaiming it was a "fancy farm." This rich history paved the way for our annual picnic, celebrating a spirit of togetherness that has thrived for over a century.
A World-Record Legacy
Founded by Maryland Catholic families in the late 1700s, this community flourished around St. Jerome Church and its early summer gatherings. These celebrations, which attracted regional leaders, were briefly interrupted by the Civil War before officially resuming in the 1880s. Today, the picnic has evolved from a local parish event into a legendary political stage featuring famous orators from across the nation.
- 1880: The first St. Jerome Picnic is held as a family get together
- 1931: A.B. “Happy” Chandler attended while running for Lt Governor and popularized the event
- 1974: Lightening struck the huge oak tree used to give speeches under- forever named "the lying tree"
- 1985: Fancy Farm was recognized by the Guinness Book of World Records for the "World's Largest Picnic"
- 2020: Covid keep the political speakers away, but the picnic tradition continued strong
