The Art of the Stump
Since 1880, the Fancy Farm Picnic has served as the ultimate proving ground for Kentucky politics. What began as a local church gathering quickly transformed into the Commonwealth’s premier campaign kickoff, where the tradition of 'stump speaking' was born from the actual tree stumps once used as makeshift stages.
Today, national and state leaders converge under the August sun to engage in a rare displays of raw oratory and political wit. This isn't just a speech; it’s a high-stakes baptism by fire that sets the tone for the entire election season, preserving a unique heritage of democratic expression that is recognized worldwide.
The “Lyin’ Tree” & Kentucky’s Political Super Bowl
For 133 years, a massive white oak at Fancy Farm stood as the silent witness to Kentucky's most heated political battles. As the primary stage for stump speeches, it became a local legend, jokingly whispered to have heard more lies than any other tree in the Commonwealth.
What Happened to the Tree?
On April 15, 1974, the legendary oak was split by a bolt of lightning. Today, its stump remains preserved at St. Jerome Catholic Church, marked by a historical plaque that commemorates over a century of Kentucky political heritage.

No Noise-Makers
The power of the voice is our tradition. Please refrain from using air horns, whistles, or electronic speakers so every citizen can hear the candidates clearly.
Heckling with Humor Only
Witty repartee is the hallmark of Fancy Farm. Keep the banter clever and the spirit communal. Personal attacks have no place under our pavilion.
Respect the Podium
While cheering is encouraged, speakers are given their allotted time without interruption. Our stage has hosted legends for over a century; let's keep it a place of honor.
Stay Prepared
August in Kentucky is hot. Bring water, fans, and a neighborly attitude. We are here to celebrate our community first and our politics second.
